7. Gays, Lesbians, Transgenders
We the Deaf People recognize that there are Deaf gays, lesbians, transgenders, intersex, gender-nonconformist, and genderqueer people. They may constitute a comparatively small number, but they are part of our community, and we welcome them. We want them to be included, valued, and safe.
We do not condone or support pedophilia in any form. We recognize the ongoing pain of survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of pedophile abusers. We recognize that even though the abuse had a finite term, survivors of childhood sexual abuse continue to live with the memories and after-effects of their experiences. We support the victims, the survivors.
We do not condone or support any kind of intolerance towards LGBTQ people in the Deaf community.
We stand firm against the kind of intolerance that has led to the suicide of several transgender teenagers.
We support the right of LGBTQ people to marriage, enjoying the same legal and economic rights traditionally accorded to spouses.
We support the right of LGBTQ people to the adoption of babies and children. There are many children, deaf and hearing, who are in urgent need of loving homes, and we believe that gays can provide the kind of loving and stable environment where children can thrive. We disagree with the stance of the Family Research Council and other anti-gay organizations that only married heterosexual couples are fit to raise children. We do not limit our definition of families to that of the traditional nuclear family unit headed by two heterosexual parents. There is a diversity of families. There is also a diversity of partnerships.
We intend to collaborate with mainstream LGBTQ organizations such as Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) to combat homophobia and to better serve the Deaf LGBTQ community.
We affirm our support for Deaf gays, lesbians, gender-nonconformist, LGBTQ people, including children and teens.
